Happy Monday, Statesboro! Bundle up out there. That arctic cold front is no joke. This week brings some exciting Eagles football news, a jam-packed holiday calendar, and big decisions happening at City Hall. Let's dive in.
🏈 Mike Mutz returns to lead Eagles defense
Georgia Southern has found its new defensive coordinator, and it's a familiar face. Mike Mutz was announced Sunday night as the hire to replace Brandon Bailey, who was fired November 30 following the unit's struggles this season.
Mutz is no stranger to Statesboro. He served as linebackers coach here from 2015-16, helping guide the Eagles to an 18-7 record and a Sun Belt Championship in 2014, including a dominant GoDaddy Bowl victory. Four of his linebackers went on to sign NFL contracts, including Edwin Jackson who started for the Indianapolis Colts.
What makes this hire compelling is what Mutz accomplished at Stephen F. Austin. His 2025 defense led all of FCS in tackles for loss per game (8.7) and ranked top-10 in sacks. SFA advanced to the national quarterfinals this season, and Mutz was named a FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year finalist.
"Eagle Nation, we are fired up to be back," Mutz said in his announcement, channeling the legendary Erk Russell: "And like Coach Erk Russell said: 'Do what your momma tells you to do, go to Sunday School, go to church, and when you die, you'll go to Statesboro.' GATA!"
The hire addresses a clear need. Georgia Southern's defense ranked dead last in FBS in rushing yards allowed this season (220+ yards per game). With nearly 30 years of coaching experience across multiple levels, Mutz brings the veteran leadership Coach Clay Helton sought. He'll officially take over following the Birmingham Bowl.
🦅 Eagles-Mountaineers set for Birmingham Bowl rematch
Mark your calendars: Georgia Southern (6-6) faces Appalachian State (5-7) in the JLab Birmingham Bowl on Monday, December 29 at 2 p.m. on ESPN.
This is a rivalry rematch. The Eagles knocked off App State 25-23 in Boone earlier this season, and now the teams will meet on neutral turf for the first time in their 42-meeting history. App State leads the all-time series 22-18-1, but momentum favors the blue and white.
"Our great fans have always traveled to each of our previous seven bowl games," Athletic Director Chris Davis said. "I have no doubt they will descend upon Birmingham for this game. Hail Southern!"
This marks Georgia Southern's eighth bowl appearance and fourth consecutive postseason trip under Coach Helton. The Eagles are currently 2.5-point favorites. Tickets are available through GSEagles.com.
🎓 Board of Regents approves GSU-EGSC consolidation
Big news for higher education in the region: The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents gave final approval December 8 for Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College to consolidate, effective January 1, 2026.
The combined institution will operate under the Georgia Southern name, with EGSC campuses becoming "Georgia Southern University - East Georgia campuses." President Kyle Marrero will lead the expanded university, and USG's institution count drops from 26 to 25.
"This action affirms that our combined institution meets the required standards of quality and readiness," President Marrero said. The consolidation aims to expand access to higher education and strengthen the regional workforce in southeastern Georgia.
🏀 Eagles basketball riding hot streaks
Both Georgia Southern basketball teams are heating up heading into conference play.
Men's Basketball (8-5) has won five straight, including a dominant 100-58 home victory over Coastal Georgia on December 11. Dwayne Williams posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyren Moore matched with 21 points in just 15 minutes. The Eagles followed that up with a road win at West Georgia, 91-85.
Women's Basketball (7-3) extended their winning streak to six games with a 136-74 victory over Coastal Georgia on December 12. The annual Kids Field Trip Day game brought over 3,500 local students to the arena. Guard Destiny Garrett was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after averaging 20.5 points while shooting 57.7% in two wins. Her play helped snap a 10-game losing streak against Furman.
Sun Belt Conference play is on deck for both squads.
🏛️ Around Statesboro: What you need to know
Kroger is officially coming. City Council unanimously approved zoning changes December 2 for a nearly 100,000 square-foot Kroger at Cypress Lake Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway. The development includes four commercial outparcels and 75 residences.
City updates purchasing policy. In the first major overhaul in 15 years, Council raised procurement thresholds to better reflect inflation and supply-chain realities. The sealed bid threshold jumped from $20,000 to $50,001.
Highway 301 widening progresses. The city awarded a $990,349 contract to Southeast Connections to relocate natural gas lines along 1.5 miles of Highway 301 North, part of GDOT's road widening project.
Groundwater monitoring approved. The Bryan-Bulloch Groundwater Sustainability Committee voted to have Georgia Southern's Institute for Water & Health monitor six wells near Hyundai's operations. An additional $527,000 from water sales will fund the project.
